Assignment 5

Pictorialism

After reading the short extract on pictorialism photography I don’t really have much more of an idea of what pictorial photograph was. My basic understanding is that pictorialist photographers were amateur photographers taking ‘snapshot’ images where as art photographers were trying to increase photography’s status as an art form and they believe that these pictorialists were destroying that effort.

Sam, we will discuss Pictorialism in class next week when I review all the subjects. However, just to explain for the time being - the Pictorialists were photographers who wanted to be seen as artists, and thus thought that the best way to do this was to make images that were more like paintings - using soft focus, selective focus etc. They thought this way they could look more like art and not like the hard mechanical reproduction of photography. They were concerned with the surface/paper, composition - all the formal elements to create images that looked "romantic" and "beautiful". Let me know next week after our class if you still do not understand this type of photography. cheers, Silvia
